Buying a Brett Martin Roof Lantern

  • Why choose a Brett Martin roof lantern?

Brett Martin is a British manufacturer with decades of daylight-systems expertise and ISO 9001 quality accreditation.

Roof lanterns from Brett Martin use a thermally broken aluminium frame, providing a slim profile but a strong frame. All frames are powder coated for minimal maintenance and are glazed with 4mm toughened, argon-filled, soft-coat Low-E glass. A self-cleaning coating is provided as standard on all units.

Every lantern is backed by a 10-year warranty and engineered for real-world loads (snow load 1,200 N/m²). It's a dependable, well-specified lantern at a mid-range price, which is why it's one of the UK's most-specified systems.

  • Contemporary vs Classic vs Pyramid. Which style should you choose?

All three share the same frame, glass and warranty; the difference is shape and look:

    - Contemporary (4-panel) is a clean-ridged profile with fewer, wider panels for a minimal, modern finish. This is usually the go-to choice for contemporary rectangular extensions.
    - Classic (6-panel) is a more decorative-ridged design with additional panels. This is often used for orangeries, larger rooms and period-style properties where the lantern is meant to be a feature.
    - Pyramid is a four-sided pyramid made for square or near-square openings, and the best-value option in the range.

If your opening is rectangular, we would recommend choosing from the Contemporary or Classic ranges; if it's square, the Pyramid is purpose-made for it.

  • Glazing Options

Each Brett Martin lantern can be specified with clear or blue (solar-tint) glass, in toughened or laminated safety glazing.

Self-cleaning glass is standard across the range for warmth and low maintenance.

Laminated glass adds an extra layer of security and acoustic performance for a modest upcharge and a slightly longer lead time. Blue glass reduces solar gain on south-facing rooms so is worth considering if you're worried about too much direct light.

If you're unsure, clear toughened self-cleaning suits most projects.

  • Delivery, lead times & installation

Brett Martin lanterns are typically dispatched in 1–3 weeks, depending on size and style. It is worth noting that bespoke sizes and laminated glazing usually take a little longer to be ready, as they will be made to order. We offer free UK mainland delivery. All units will arrive ready to install onto a prepared builder's kerb. We supply the lantern only; your builder forms the kerb and fits it. See our builder's kerb guide for how to prepare the opening so it fits first time.

  • What size do I need, and will it span my opening?

As a rule of thumb, a lantern covering 15–20% of the room's floor area gives a balanced amount of light. Brett Martin roof lanterns run from compact stock sizes upward, with larger and made-to-measure units available if you need them.

It is really important to measure the finished builder's kerb the lantern will sit on, not the ceiling opening, before you determine the size you need and order your lantern. If you're unsure, send us your kerb dimensions, and we'll confirm the size.
