Are flat rooflights only suitable for flat roofs?

No. Despite the name, flat rooflights are not limited to completely flat roofs. They are typically designed for installation on flat roofs and low-pitched roofs, provided the roof structure meets the manufacturer's minimum pitch requirements.

Most flat roofs are constructed with a slight fall to encourage rainwater drainage, and rooflights are designed to work within these parameters. For steeper roof pitches, however, a purpose-designed pitched rooflight or roof window is usually the more suitable option.

Always check the manufacturer's installation guidelines to ensure the rooflight is compatible with the roof's pitch and construction.

What's the minimum pitch for a flat rooflight?

The minimum pitch depends on the specific rooflight and manufacturer. As a general guide, many flat rooflights are designed to be installed on roofs with a minimum fall of around 3–5°, while others may be suitable for lower or higher pitches depending on their design and drainage requirements.

A small amount of fall is important because it helps prevent standing water from accumulating on the glazing surface, which can affect appearance, increase maintenance requirements, and impact long-term performance.

As installation requirements vary between manufacturers and product ranges, it is important to check the detailed technical specification of your chosen rooflight before installation. Following the manufacturer's recommended pitch and upstand requirements will help ensure effective drainage, weather performance, and warranty compliance.

Do flat rooflights leak?

A correctly specified and professionally installed flat rooflight should not leak. Modern rooflights are designed with weatherproof seals, drainage channels, and flashing details that provide effective protection against water ingress.

Most rooflight leaks are not caused by the glazing unit itself but by issues with installation, roofing interfaces, damaged seals, or inadequate waterproofing around the upstand.

Choosing a high-quality rooflight and ensuring it is installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions are the most important factors in achieving a durable, weathertight installation.

Can you walk on a flat rooflight?

In most cases, no. Standard flat rooflights are not designed to be walked on and should never be used as part of a roof access route unless they have been specifically engineered and certified for that purpose.

Walking on a non-walk-on rooflight can damage the glazing, seals, or frame and may create a safety risk. Where roof access is required, specifically designed walk-on rooflights are available, featuring specialist laminated glass and enhanced structural performance to support weight.

If a rooflight will be installed in an area where people may walk, it is essential to specify a walk-on rated product from the outset.

What is the difference between frameless and framed glass rooflight?

The main difference is appearance and how the rooflight is constructed.

Frameless rooflights are designed to maximise the visible glass area and create a clean, minimalist appearance. The external frame is concealed from view, giving the impression of a seamless glass opening within the roof. They are often specified in contemporary residential projects where aesthetics are a priority.

Framed rooflights incorporate a visible frame around the glazing unit. While they may not offer the same minimalist appearance, they can provide a more traditional look and may offer greater flexibility across certain sizes, specifications, and budgets.

Both frameless and framed rooflights can deliver excellent thermal performance, weather resistance, and natural daylight. The best choice will depend on the design requirements, budget, and overall aesthetic of the project.
