Astroglaze Walk-On Rooflight Helps Transform Outside Space in Central London

Project

Architect Sara Bondia lived in a first-floor apartment in central London without outdoor space. Just outside her kitchen window lay the roof of a ground-floor extension. Determined to enjoy time in the open air, Sara decided to transform the roof into a stylish and functional terrace for her family.

Requirements

Sara applied for planning permission to renovate the space, incorporating wooden flooring and a mix of stylish glass and wooden balustrades to ensure privacy for her neighbours. Replacing an existing skylight, which covered much of the terrace, was a key part of the project.

The custom solution required a large walk-on skylight measuring 1550mm x 2132mm, designed to meet stringent building regulations. To maintain a seamless surface with the new wooden flooring, the skylight needed to meet a specific minimum frame height.

Solution

Adept at delivering custom-made solutions, the answer was an Astroglaze walk-on skylight from Rooflights & Skylights. To ensure privacy, the glazing was fully sandblasted and treated with a Ritec easy-clean coating for simple maintenance. The textured surface provided grip for safety, critical as the terrace would also be a play area for Sara’s young family. From a design perspective, a white border was selected for the glazing, and the fixings were custom-coated in a sleek black/grey RAL 7021 finish.

Conclusion

The result is a much-loved balcony, offering sought-after outdoor space.

“I’m delighted with the new balcony,” says Sara. “Before, we had no usable external space, just two small windows. Now, with large, glazed doors, we walk out into this big open area. It’s transformed how we live and has been wonderful, especially on hot summer evenings.”
