  • Are rooflights suitable for bathrooms with high humidity?

    If the bathroom generates significant moisture, specifying an opening rooflight is worth considering, as it allows warm, humid air to escape naturally and helps reduce condensation build-up.

  • Do bathroom rooflights need to be opening?

    No. A fixed rooflight can work perfectly well in a bathroom if ventilation is provided by other means, such as an extractor fan or an opening window.

    However, an opening rooflight can offer additional benefits by allowing warm, humid air to escape naturally. This can help improve airflow and reduce the build-up of condensation, particularly in larger bathrooms or those with high ceilings where mechanical ventilation alone may be less effective.

  • Can I get obscure or privacy glass in a bathroom rooflight?

    Yes. Many rooflights are available with obscure or privacy glazing where additional screening is required.

    The level of obscurity can vary depending on the type of glass or polycarbonate specified. Some are diffused or stippled, while others are opaque or milky. While privacy glass reduces visibility from above, it still allows natural daylight to pass through into the room, making it a popular choice for bathrooms and en-suites where additional privacy is required.

  • What size rooflight is best for a bathroom?

    The ideal size will depend on the dimensions and layout of the bathroom, as well as the amount of natural light required. A commonly used rule of thumb is for glazing to account for around 15-20% of the floor area - for a typical bathroom of around 5-6m², that equates to roughly 0.75-1.2m² of glazing.

    A smaller rooflight may be sufficient for a compact en-suite, while larger bathrooms often benefit from a bigger unit or two smaller rooflights positioned to distribute daylight more evenly. Ceiling height, roof construction and the position of the rooflight will also influence the ideal size.

  • Are electric or automatic rooflights in a bathroom safe?

    Yes, when correctly specified and installed. Electric rooflights intended for bathrooms are designed to operate safely in humid environments, provided the electrical installation complies with the manufacturer's instructions and current Building Regulations.

    Please note some manufacturers don't recommend putting electric hinged rooflights in an area with above average humidity. Please check with us to make sure the brand you are looking to order is suitable for this use.
